?  Can nukeFEED(tm) display feeds from other sites?

nukeFEED™ is a feed generator, not a feed reader.  nukeFEED™ gives websites running PHP-Nuke, RavenNuke, Nuke Evo and other PHP-Nuke distributions the ability to create feeds for other sites to consume, using current formats for most major types of content.  This gives site visitors another way to use the site - via their favorite portal (iGoogle, My Yahoo, etc.) or feed / RSS reader.

?  Isn't backend.php good enough?

The backend.php file that comes with most PHP-Nuke distributions generates a feed with a fixed number of news stories for a site in RSS 0.91 format, with the title and a link.  This is extremely limited when you consider that:
  • Current feed readers may no longer support RSS 0.91, but take advantage of HTML content in RSS 2.0 and ATOM feeds.
  • You may want to have different types of content and varying numbers of feed items in multiple feeds at different levels (e.g. the last 5 forum topics from the Announcements forum, or the last 20 topics from General discussion forum).
  • There is no preview of the backend.php feed, no support for auto-discovery (though RavenNuke and other distributions have added this), and limited validation for the resulting feed.
  • Backend.php has very limited support for FeedBurner.com integration.
Yes, other backendxxx.php files have been developed for other types of content and some even support RSS2.0, but these are still limited solutions for very specific needs.  Adding a new content type requires complex development - and still has limitations.

?  What is auto-discovery?

According to the RSS Advisory Board:

Auto-discovery is a technique that makes it possible for browsers and other software to automatically find a site's RSS feed, whether it's in RSS 1.0 or RSS 2.0 format.

Supported by Mozilla Firefox 2.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0 and other browsers, auto-discovery has become the best way to inform users that a web site offers a syndication feed. When a browser loads a page and discovers that a feed is available, Firefox and Internet Explorer display the common feed icon in the address bar.

Users can click the icon to subscribe with the browser's RSS reader or the user's preferred reader. Web publishers who offer feeds reach a wider potential audience with autodiscovery.

?  I have feeds defined, but my browser doesn't auto-discover them. Why?

It's possible that the installation wasn't completed correctly or that the feed isn't active.  If so, there should be a link-rel tag in the HEAD section of all non-admin pages of your site that looks something like:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="nukeSEO PHPNuke SEO News" href="http://feeds.nukeseo.com/nukeSEO" />

?  Why can't I toggle the display of subscription links, display popup help in the admin section, use linked selections / save a new feed, use the color selector?

It's a long list of questions -but the answer is short: the installation was completed correctly.  Many of the important functions in nukeFEED™ require JS, CSS or other files that must be loaded in the HEAD section of a page.  If they aren't loaded properly, the functions won't work, and it's usually a missed step in the installation.

If everything is installed correctly, you should also make sure your browser isn't blocking JS on your site.

?  Why should I use Feedburner?

I'm sure that's a joke, but just in case:
  • Feedburner publishes - and tracks - your feeds using its own servers, which alleviates some of the load on your server.
  • With almost 1 million feeds, it has become the defacto directory of feeds.
  • Feedburner provides additional services like Headline Animator, Buzz Boost, Email Subscriptions, Ping Shot and FeedCount to promote your feed - and your site.
  • Now a part of Google, Feedburner can be expected to expand its FeedBurner Ad Network (FAN), giving your another way to generate revenue from your site.  Google likes Sitemaps because it eliminates the need to scan a site and distinguish between noise (e.g. navigation, ads, etc.) and real content.  Feeds also provide pure content - making them a desirable alternative to sitemaps.  In fact, Google recently announced that its sitemap program would accept feeds!
  • Feedburner has feed monitoring functions built-in, so you can see when there is a problem with your feed.
  • It's ALL free.

?  Why do all of the drop downs (select tags) disappear when help is displayed?

The boxover script used for popup help (as with most similar scripts) has problems with these tags.  Basically, if a popup touches a select, you won't be able to see the popup.  Fortunately, boxover has the ability to temporarily disable selects when the popup is displayed.

?  Why does the color picker show on top of popup help?

The color picker uses DHTML and can be moved around the screen, while the popup uses JS and is usually displayed near the help icon that initiated it.  You can toggle the color picker on and off so you can see the popup help when you need it.

?  Can I use nukeFEED with TegoNuke(tm) ShortLinks?

Yes, thanks to Montego.  In the extras directory, you'll find a file name ShortLinks_nukeFEED that contains the necessary additions for ShortLinks to support nukeFEED.  Some aggregators may require a short link.

?  Can I change the list of aggregators / subscription links?

Sure - just click the Aggregators link in nukeFEED™ administration.  You can see the list of aggregators, which were selected based on Google PageRank™ and Alexa ranking.  You can add or remove aggregators from the list, or make aggregators inactive, which removes them from the display without removing them from the possible aggregators.

?  What is a feed map?

A feed map is a sitemap for feeds - it lists all of the active feeds available from a website.  In nukeFEED™, the default display in the Feeds module is a feed map.  The feed map also has a link to an OPML feed map, which is an XML version of the feed map that can be used by many feed aggregators.

?  What is OPML?

OPML (Outline Processor Markup Language) is an XML format for outlines.  In nukeFEED™, it is used to create an XML feed map that can be used to exchange lists of web feeds with web feed aggregators.

?  Why isn't the FeedCount chicklet being displayed?

Even if you have a FeedBurner account, turn on FeedBurner integration in nukeFEED™, and define a FeedBurner address in nukeFEED™, you must still active the FeedCount service at http://feedburner.com.

?  Why isn't the Feed Circulation Graphic being displayed correctly?

The feed circulation graph is a service of Joost de Valk's SEO Blog. It requires that the FeedBurner Awareness API be activated for the feed in your FeedBurner account.

Occasionally, the feed circulation graph may still show an error (e.g. JPGRAPH error) even after the Awareness API is activated.  Initializing the graph may resolve this.  To do this, visit http://www.joostdevalk.nl/code/feedburner-graph/ and enter the FeedBurner address for the feed in question.  This will generate the graph, and make it available to on your HTML preview page afterwards.

?  Why does my database log show Table nuke_tuto_infos doesn't exist messages?

nukeFEED uses classes created for different types of content to determine how to process that content.  This enables a simple approach for adding additional content types to nukeFEED.  Classes for the NSN Group Downloads and Tutoriaux modules have been included with the download, and nukeFEED uses those content classes to check for the existence of corresponding database tables to determine if these modules are used on the current website.  If the modules aren't being used, the tables won't exist, and nukeFEED won't make them available as selections in the Feed Administration function.  ONLY the Feed Administration function uses this technique, so the errors will only appear in the database error log when an administrator uses that function.

If you remove the scripts that correspond to unused content types from the includes/nukeSEO/content directory (for example, Tutoriaux.php and Downloads_GR.php), these messages will no longer appear in the database log when administrators use the Feed Administration function.

Since some modules may use the same directory and file names (e.g. Downloads and NSN Group Downloads), it would be impossible to use the existence of files as a way to determine if a module were in use.  This is why nukeFEED checks for the existence of specific database tables to determine if a module is in use.
