Fully agree.
In fact since the beginning of 2008 I have started taking on client work installing scripts, modules etc and I'm making it a personal mission to ensure I give back financially to those coders who's work I use for my clients.
Where my own fee is less than or equal to the authors 'recommended' donation I donate on a 50/50 basis.

It isn't going to make anyone rich but hopefully I am making a contribution in my own small way to ensure current code is maintained and updated in the future.
